How Much Do You Know You?

One of my favourite Hindi songs says that the little things you do make up who you are. At first, i disagreed but then, as i grew older i came to understand that you are actually what you do, what you see, what you think, and even what you eat. I also noticed that people mostly paint picture(s) for others to see which usually is not theirs; ”it’s called personality,” they usually say. Don’t get me wrong, i am not against building up personalities, i am concerned that so many people, in an attempt to build their so called personality they lost the sense of who they really are. Some people don’t even have a clue on who they are, yet they make a fuse about creating personalities.
Personality, in my own words, can be defined as the picture of yourself that you decide to show the world. Everyone needs a personality boost – no doubt – since the world is a global village, and inter-personal relations are expected. Talking about relationships, it is important that i say this, as much as inter-personal relationship is vital, the need for intra-personal relationship can never be over-emphasized. The former is concerned with the relationship without; i.e., between other people while the latter is concerned with the relationship within you! It sounds funny but it is the truth, you can never have a better relationship with people than the relationship you have with yourself. The problem with many marriages and courtship is not usually lack of the understanding of their spouse but lack of knowledge of who they are as indivduals which leads to trying to find someone who can fill the void inside them.
In every personality, there is a place of temperaments and character, it is an attrocity to try to push one of them aside. In order to ensure a good relationship with you, it is essential to relate with the three. Temperaments are in-born traits; there is little you can do about it, you were born with it. They can only be modified because there is no temperament without faults. Characters are in-built traits, your character is built in you probably by your upbring, environment, hobbies or what have you. Personalities are made-up traits, it is good to polish our personality but not at the expense of our temperaments and characters. Good intra-personal relationships give us stable identities. Polishing our personalities alone will bring us more harm than good.
